As moms, we all know that even the best-laid plans can go awry. This weekend, our family experienced firsthand why agile family life and flexibility are crucial for effective household management. What started as a simple task on our family task board quickly evolved into an unexpected challenge that tested our agility and teamwork. Let me share our story and the valuable lessons we learned about embracing agile principles to stay adaptable and resilient in family life.

Agile Task Management: Cleaning the Living Room Rug

On our family task board, we had a task to clean the living room rug. We initially estimated it as a 3-point task, thinking it would be a straightforward job with our trusty Bissell CrossWave. Little did we know what adventures awaited us!

When Technology Throws a Curveball

As I started the cleaning process, we encountered an unexpected hurdle. Our Bissell CrossWave, which has been our go-to cleaning floor cleaner for years on our hardwood floors and carpets, met its match with our living room rug. The thin, washable rug kept getting sucked up into the machine, causing it to draw too much power and trip the outlet surge protector repeatedly. Clearly not the reaction we anticipated. I know what you’re thinking, it’s washable, so why not throw it in the washer?! Well, turns out just because it says ‘washable,’ doesn’t mean it’ll fit in your washer (whomp whomp).

Adapting on the Fly: Applying Agile Principles to Family Life

This is where our agile mindset kicked in. Instead of getting frustrated or giving up, we pivoted our approach:

  1. Reassessing the Tools: We realized we needed a different solution and borrowed a Bissell Little Green Machine from my in-laws.
  2. Adjusting Expectations: The Little Green Machine, typically used for spot cleaning or smaller areas, meant the job would take longer than anticipated.
  3. Reprioritizing the Backlog: With the rug cleaning taking longer than expected, we had to reshuffle our weekend tasks, demonstrating true agility in our household management.

While the Little Green Machine required more time and effort to clean our expansive 9×12 foot rug (that’s 108 square feet of fabric!), it proved to be the perfect tool for the job. Despite the extended timeline needed to tackle such a large area with a device designed for smaller tasks, the end result was fantastic – a thoroughly clean rug that met all our task acceptance criteria. This experience reinforced a key agile principle: it’s not just about speed, but about delivering quality results, even if it means adapting your approach along the way.

The 3-Point Task Becomes a 5-Point Reality

As we worked through this challenge, it became clear that our initial 3-point estimate had grown into a 5-point task. However, the additional effort was well worth it, as we achieved our goal of a clean living room rug. This experience beautifully illustrates two key principles in agile methodology: story points are estimates, not guarantees, and the importance of focusing on meeting acceptance criteria rather than rigidly sticking to initial time estimates. This new understanding of the task will also help us when preparing for it next time it comes up on our family task board.

The Power of Backlog Management

This experience also showcased the importance of maintaining a flexible backlog in an agile household. As the rug cleaning task expanded from its initial 3-point estimate to a 5-point reality, we had to make some quick decisions about our other planned tasks.

My husband had originally planned to mulch our flower beds that day – a task that was lower in our priority list but still on the weekend’s agenda. However, as the rug cleaning extended beyond its expected timeframe, we realized we needed to shift gears. The flower bed mulching, being a lower priority item in our backlog, was moved to another day. (I’m pretty sure my husband didn’t mind the task being moved to another day!)

This real-time reprioritization is a perfect example of agile principles in action within a household:

  1. Focus on High-Value Items: By choosing to complete the rug cleaning over the mulching, we ensured that the highest-priority task was finished.
  2. Embrace Change: Instead of rigidly sticking to our original plan, we adapted to the new circumstances.
  3. Continuous Re-evaluation: As the situation evolved, we reassessed our capacity and adjusted our task list accordingly.

This flexibility allowed us to successfully complete the most important task for the day, even when it took more time and effort than initially anticipated. It’s a reminder that in both software development and home management, the ability to reprioritize and shift focus as needed is crucial for overall productivity and success.
